Federal and Provincial Governments Announce Support for Expansion of Nova Cold Storage

DARTMOUTH (NS) – DECEMBER 14, 2012 –Nova Cold Consolidated Limited, a Dartmouth cold storage firm, will expand and modernize its plant in anticipation of expanding export markets, with assistance from the Government of Canada and the Province of Nova Scotia. The announcement was made today by the Honourable Peter MacKay, Minister of National Defence and Regional Minister for Nova Scotia and Becky Kent, MLA for Cole Harbour-Eastern Passage.

“Food exporters in Atlantic Canada are looking further afield to sell their products and they need state-of-the-art cold storage facilities and handling technology to remain competitive,” said Minister MacKay, on behalf of the Honourable Bernard Valcourt, Associate Minister of National Defence and Minister of State (Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency) (La Francophonie). “Our government is helping Atlantic Canadian businesses build a more competitive economy and the planned Nova Cold Storage expansion and modernization will be an important asset for Nova Scotia’s food industry.”

The Government of Canada, through Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency, will provide the company with a loan of $410,000 under its Business Development Program to establish a modern cold chain logistical centre in the Atlantic Gateway Halifax Logistics Park. ACOA’s assistance will support the purchase and installation of machinery and equipment for the new facility.

The Province of Nova Scotia is investing $540,000 in the project, through the Productivity Investment Program.

Nova Cold is using funds from the Productivity Investment Program to help purchase new, efficient refrigeration equipment for its new state-of-the-art cold storage facility in the Atlantic Gateway Halifax Logistics Park, located in Burnside.

Nova Cold offers warehousing, customs clearance, transloading, freight forwarding and other value-added services in the Atlantic Gateway Halifax Logistics Park, located in the Burnside Industrial Park. The company’s new facility will boast the latest in cold storage and handling technology.

“This expansion will provide exporters with increased capacity for their products at a time when the landscape of food exporting in Atlantic Canada and nationally is rapidly changing,” said Barry Smith, President of Nova Cold Storage. “Today there is a greater emphasis on quality, traceability and food security and our clients require more support in preparing their products for export.”
